Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the Michigan Senate, has issued a unique challenge to his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers. El-Sayed, who is 41 years old, invited the 63-year-old former FBI agent to a tackle football match. The challenge arose after El-Sayed accused Rogers of avoiding a debate.
El-Sayed wrote on X, “Since you’re too afraid to debate me, how about you ‘hold me accountable’ on a football field instead. Tackle, no pads like we used to play when we were kids. I’d be happy to show you how much I love football.”
The challenge has added to the drama of the Senate race, as Rogers attempts to capitalize on El-Sayed’s past critical comments about football. Meanwhile, El-Sayed is focusing on sports and fitness, aiming to attract male voters. The exchanges between the two have become personal. Rogers’ campaign responded by mocking El-Sayed’s height.
“This guy spent hours hating on what most Michiganders would enjoy in their pastimes, and he should be held to account for that,”said Rogers on Fox News, in response to a clip where he criticized El-Sayed for previous comments on football and independence celebrations.
El-Sayed’s 2021 essay criticized the “toxic masculinity” in sports culture, something Rogers has used to question El-Sayed’s past views. Yet, El-Sayed, who played football in high school, argued that sports were a vital part of his life and has used them to engage male voters, often sharing fitness content on his platforms.
Rogers’ campaign, maintaining a playful tone, commented on El-Sayed’s challenge by saying, “That’s an awfully tall threat coming from down there,” referencing El-Sayed’s height. Additionally, Rogers’ campaign posted a humorous GIF, invoking a pop culture reference to El-Sayed’s stature.
El-Sayed, who was listed at 5 feet, 9 inches during his lacrosse days, and previously at 5 feet, 8 inches in a 2008 news report, did not provide a comment when Fox News Digital reached out.
