The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is implementing a wide rollout of computed tomography (CT) scanning equipment at airport checkpoints. These advanced devices offer a three-dimensional view of the contents inside carry-on bags. This upgrade eliminates the need for passengers to remove items from their bags when passing through security.
CT scanners promise more accurate detection of potentially dangerous items that older X-ray machines may have missed. Despite this capability, some critics argue that using this technology for all carry-on bags might not be the best approach. Concerns include increased wait times and the substantial costs of deploying and maintaining the machines.
The TSA believes the enhanced detection capabilities justify the investment. The agency emphasizes that CT scanners can improve security measures by providing clearer and more detailed images. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security protocols and keep pace with evolving threats.
