Progressive Media Critiques Ocasio-Cortez’s Shift from ‘Woke’ Ideals

Recently, progressive media outlets have begun to critique Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., for her attempts to downplay her past progressive rhetoric. On Tuesday, The Atlantic published an article titled ‘The Democrat Can’t Just Laugh Off ‘Woke 1,’ where they critiqued Ocasio-Cortez for dismissing the extreme ideas she once championed as a thing of the past.

On ABC’s “This Week,” Ocasio-Cortez humorously referred to “Woke 1” as a “crazy” era. This prompted criticism from writer Idrees Kahloon, who noted that Ocasio-Cortez is not the only Democrat trying to distance herself from past extreme positions, like defunding the police. Kahloon warned these attempts at distancing might backfire as socialist influence grows within the party.

“Ideas never die, but they can go dormant. The silence of conventional Democrats and the rise of the DSA could recreate the political struggles seen during the 2020 primaries,” Kahloon expressed.

Similarly, a report from Mother Jones viewed Ocasio-Cortez’s comments as a move towards moderation for a potential 2028 presidential bid. They suggested this strategy might alienate her supporters who continue to struggle with issues from the late 2010s.

CNN’s Aaron Blake also commented on Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks, expressing concern over trust in political figures and the authenticity of their positions. He emphasized the importance of politicians who genuinely believe in and remain consistent with their principles.

While Vox largely supported Ocasio-Cortez, recognizing a shift in tone, they acknowledged the importance of core values like diversity and equity among Democratic voters. They argued that the way politicians communicate these ideals has changed, rather than the ideals themselves.
