United States Marine veteran Robert Gilman, after 1,666 days in custody, was released from Russian imprisonment on humanitarian grounds. His arrest in January 2022 came while traveling in Russia as he was en route to Moldova. After becoming seriously ill, he stopped in Moscow, according to family representative Kieran Ramsey.
Background on Gilman’s Arrest
In November 2021, Gilman was traveling to Moldova but ended up in Moscow due to illness. He attempted to renew his passport in January 2022 when he fell ill again. Russian police alleged intoxication, leading to his arrest for assaulting officers. This marked the beginning of a prolonged and difficult imprisonment.
Efforts for Release
The U.S. State Department classified Gilman as a wrongful detainee. His release resulted from an exchange with Russia, which did not involve other concessions. Former President Donald Trump noted his involvement in negotiating Gilman’s release, expressing gratitude for Russia’s decision.
“I am proud to announce that Robert is returning home. His release happened without exchange,” Trump mentioned. On Truth Social, Trump detailed his conversation with Gilman, who requested a cheeseburger upon landing in the U.S. Gilman’s mother, Nancy, journeyed with him home.
Health Concerns and Recovery
During his captivity, Gilman’s health deteriorated, culminating in a catatonic state, fed through a nasal tube. Upon returning to the U.S., he will receive a full medical evaluation at a military hospital in Texas.

Gilman’s release follows the high-profile detentions of other Americans in Russia, including Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed. Both were released via prisoner exchanges.

Robert’s sister, Lexie Hudson, expressed gratitude to both Trump and Senator Ed Markey for their roles in securing Gilman’s freedom. Hudson stressed the unnecessary brutality suffered by Gilman, only due to his American and Marine identities.
Kieran Ramsey, with extensive experience in hostage processes, emphasized the severe nature of Gilman’s treatment as atypically harsh.
