President Donald Trump accused a historic preservation group of disclosing “top military secrets” in a dispute over the White House ballroom project. He labeled its members “treasonists” as his administration took the matter to the Supreme Court. White House Complex Details
Trump argued that the new East Wing complex, which would include a rooftop DronePort, is essential for security. The administration’s Supreme Court filing describes security features such as bomb shelters and sniper positions, extending five stories underground. The trust sued, claiming the project lacks congressional approval and necessary reviews. A federal appeals court blocked aboveground construction but allowed work on underground facilities.
National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Position
The National Trust has not directly addressed Trump’s accusation but has previously denied seeing any “Top Secret” plans. Gregory Craig, their attorney, responded to similar claims in April, calling them “incorrect and irresponsible.” The Trust maintains it was not shown details beyond public court claims.
Supreme Court Involvement
The administration seeks to suspend an injunction blocking construction while pursuing a full Supreme Court review. Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued the government is likely to win on the merits and stopping work would cause irreparable harm. The project is over 65% complete, making major design changes unfeasible. The D.C. Circuit had rejected a broader Presidential power view, stating major changes require Congressional approval.
Judge Neomi Rao dissented, supporting the administration’s position. Chief Justice John Roberts set a deadline for the Trust to respond, with the Trust urging denial of the administration’s request.

In a Truth Social post, Trump criticized the Trust for allegedly revealing secret plans. He highlighted the organization’s lack of governmental status, criticizing their mission and past decisions. Trump claimed the Trust’s actions were detrimental to national security.
