At least five individuals were shot at Virginia State University (VSU) on Saturday morning. Police reported that one of the victims remains in critical condition. The incident occurred outside the university’s residence halls.
Authorities have arrested Camron Harris, age 19, from Henrico, Virginia. Police discovered him hiding in a dormitory closet. Harris is not a student of VSU. Police have secured eight felony warrants against him, including charges related to malicious wounding and firearm use during a felony.
The victims range from 17 to 23 years old. Only one is a VSU student, aged 20, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital. The names of the victims have not been disclosed.
The Chesterfield County Police, with the support of VSU police, have led the investigation. The U.S. Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) and Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are also involved. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Police had initially stated that multiple suspects were involved, but further details are pending.
“We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community,” the university commented.
The university went into lockdown as a precaution, but it has since been lifted. As a safety response, VSU police have increased their presence on campus. The university advises students to check their email for updates about safety measures and available support resources.
Renowned alumni and officials have expressed their support and condolences. Delegate Rozia A. Henson Jr. conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the victims and the entire VSU community. Similarly, Governor Abigail Spanberger offered thoughts and prayers for all those affected.
