California authorities recently confiscated suspected cocaine valued at over $800,000 during a routine traffic stop, officials reported. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) disclosed that a Central Division canine officer pulled over a 2025 Honda CR-V in Merced County on August 12 due to a supposed traffic infraction.
During the stop, the officer observed multiple signs of potential criminal conduct, CHP noted. Upon searching the vehicle, the officer found a bag containing about 30 pounds of suspected cocaine, estimated to be worth $817,200 on the street.
The officer’s actions led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 30 pounds of cocaine, which has significant implications for drug trafficking prevention efforts in the area.
The driver was detained and taken to the Merced County Main Jail, facing charges of cocaine possession with the intent to sell and transporting cocaine across non-contiguous counties. The Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) is leading the investigation into this incident.
This seizure follows a major federal drug bust last month, where authorities found over 1,000 pounds of cocaine beneath the floorboards of a commercial truck entering from Mexico. This was one of the largest drug seizures in Southern California this year, highlighting the ongoing challenges in combating drug trafficking.
Additionally, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently announced the discovery of about $3.7 million worth of cocaine concealed in a cucumber shipment. Officers at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas, using canine inspection and imaging technology, found anomalies in a tractor-trailer that held 278.88 pounds of cocaine.
The Justice Department confirmed that over half a ton of cocaine was unearthed at the Calexico Port of Entry along the California-Mexico border, with a street value surpassing $20 million.
