Joshua Báez’s Historic Major League Debut

In an impressive debut at Wrigley Field, Joshua Báez made history by hitting a home run in each of his first three major league at-bats. His performance was a crucial factor in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Báez was added to the Cardinals’ roster from Triple-A Memphis just before the game. Among the spectators were 30 members of his family, including his mother, Yris, all gathered to witness his unforgettable debut.

There was a calmness and a smile, like, ‘I’m here,’ Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol remarked, noting the remarkable nature of Báez’s achievement.

Báez’s first home run came from the first pitch he faced, traveling 449 feet into the left-center bleachers. He added further solo homers in his next two at-bats, showcasing his range by sending the third home run in the opposite direction, amassing a total of five RBIs.

Major League Baseball confirmed Báez as the first player in modern history to hit three home runs during their debut game, acknowledging that records before 1901 lack sufficient logs for verification.

He hit three different pitches for home runs. He had a great game. He beat us for sure, acknowledged Cubs manager Craig Counsell.

Prior to his call-up, Báez led all Triple-A players with 34 home runs, including four multihomer games. He represents the ninth player to make a debut for the Cardinals this season.

Báez also became the 11th player in Cardinals history to homer in his first major league at-bat. The last Cardinal to achieve this was Lane Thomas in 2019. Moreover, he is the sixth in club history to hit a home run on his first pitch, a feat last accomplished by Adam Wainwright in 2006.
