Shannon Watts, a Democratic political operative and advocate for gun control, sharply criticized Hasan Piker, a prominent progressive figure, for his past controversial online statements. Watts accused Piker of employing tactics to dismiss his inflammatory remarks after receiving backlash on social media.
Watts expressed her disapproval, saying, “Hasan Piker defense Bingo card: ‘It’s a joke, satire, hyperbole. It’s out of context. It was years ago,’ and ‘English is my second language. I stream for hours. Bad faith clipping. Smear campaign. Critics are being paid for Israel.’”

Evan Barker, a former Democratic operative, noted the party’s need to recognize that controversial figures like Twitch streamer Hasan Piker are becoming increasingly representative of their movement.
Piker responded to Watts’ criticism, acknowledging the pattern of his responses. “All of that is true and valid. You behave as a GOP operative. You’re a shameless grifter who doesn’t care about the Dem Senate majority or punishing Trump,” Piker stated.
Fred Guttenberg, a Democratic activist with personal tragedies linked to the Parkland shooting and 9/11, opposed Piker’s angle, accusing him of echoing MAGA tactics and misrepresenting facts. Guttenberg expressed his disdain by saying, “Your attack on Shannon is batsh– crazy and your comparison of the NRA and AIPAC only confirms your insanity.”
Watts’ dispute with Piker highlights growing concerns within the Democratic Party over resurfaced controversial posts and remarks by progressives. For instance, former Senate candidate Graham Platner faced issues that began as eyebrow-raising Reddit posts and expanded into sexual assault allegations. Similarly, Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan’s Senate Democratic nominee, drew criticism for prior calls to defund the police.
Watts, focusing on gun control advocacy for 14 years, asserted that Democrats might be ignoring the online histories of some candidates, risking their electability and trustworthiness. Although not a candidate, Piker supports El-Sayed and other progressive leaders, which brings his past comments under scrutiny.

In 2019, Piker sparked outrage by claiming “America deserved 9/11” before retracting the statement as “inappropriate.” He also stated his lack of support for the governments of Israel and the United States during a discussion on terrorism.
Piker’s exchange with Watts initiated after the University of Washington canceled his event due to his rhetoric on Israel. Piker reacted by advocating for First Amendment principles against what he termed “undemocratic & unamerican forces of Trumpism.” He called for the protection of free speech and due process, which he alleged were under attack.
Watts questioned Piker’s consistency by recalling his encouragement towards President Trump’s threats against Adam Schiff, a long-time adversary. She quoted Piker saying, “Oh my God, I hope they arrest him. Oh my God, I hope he goes to prison. Yeah, this is political. Sure. I don’t care. Lock him up. Lock him up.”
Piker has consistently criticized Schiff for receiving support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and for perceived inaction concerning U.S.-Israel relations.

A Democratic commentator questioned the sincerity of Piker’s defense, pointing out the apparent seriousness in his videos.
