Storms and Flooding in Indiana Result in Six Fatalities

The recent storms in Indiana have led to significant devastation, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals as of August 16, 2026. The affected individuals included a 4-year-old boy, two men, and three women, reported Liz Woods, a spokesperson for the state Department of Homeland Security. These events followed the onset of storms on August 11.

The White River in Indianapolis reached its peak flooding levels early Sunday, with expectations for the high water to maintain its level for several hours before receding, according to the city Department of Public Works.

“The flooding we’ve witnessed is unprecedented in the past three decades,” stated Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.

As heavy rains continued, city shelters provided refuge for hundreds of residents evacuated from homes along the river and its canals. First responders conducted rescues using boats to assist those trapped by the swift rise in water levels.

The National Weather Service warned that heavy rain and flash floods remained a threat in the central regions of Indiana, including Indianapolis. Residents were advised to monitor weather forecasts and river conditions while staying away from dangerous floodwaters.

The intense rain also damaged or destroyed numerous roads and bridges across the state. Liz Woods, alongside PowerOutage.us, reported that approximately 130,000 utility customers were without power by midday Sunday, a reduction from a peak of 300,000 outages.

The White River’s crest exceeded 24 feet in Anderson and Noblesville, surpassing flood records from 1913. The state faced evacuations and welfare checks, including significant efforts in a senior mobile home community north of Indianapolis.

In response to the widespread devastation, President Donald Trump approved Governor Mike Braun’s request for federal disaster assistance to support flood recovery efforts.

Aside from Indiana, the severe weather, including tornadoes, impacted a broader region from Illinois to western Pennsylvania, causing widespread damage.
