Becky G, at 29, has spent almost two decades in entertainment. Her fifth studio album, Baraja Bendita or ‘Blessed Deck of Cards,’ marks her return to rap, a genre she has long cherished. “My urban roots are a part of me,” she shared with Morning Edition. “It is how I got signed. It is how I got discovered. It is one of my first loves.”
This enthusiasm echoes in her track “Epa” and its music video, filmed at Los Angeles’ famed El Mercadito. The video features Becky G shattering a large block of ice, followed by a celebratory dance scene. When asked about the imagery amidst current U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issues, she explained that the song began with chords that felt urgent, like alarms. She felt grateful for the safe space to express herself.
“We need to keep creating,”
she emphasized.
This notion influenced the ice-breaking scene. After the block breaks, “there’s this beautiful, euphoric joy,” she noted, as everyone dances together.
In her interview with NPR’s A Martínez, Becky G delved into the inspirations behind her new project and her growth as an artist. You can listen to the full discussion by playing the audio above.
