The Pennsylvania Attorney General, Dave Sunday, has announced charges against 14 individuals in connection with a cocaine distribution ring involving Penn State University students and two off-campus fraternities. The involved students were either currently enrolled at Penn State or were students at the time of the alleged activities in 2023 and 2024. The case also includes a student’s father, facing charges for tampering with evidence.
Main Suspects and Allegations
Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson are identified as the primary suppliers. They allegedly traveled frequently to Philadelphia and New York to acquire substantial amounts of cocaine. The Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities allegedly served as locations where the drug was cut, packaged, and subsequently distributed to students.
“This was a coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew revolving around senior fraternity members, other fraternity brothers, and pledges,” said Attorney General Dave Sunday.
Along with Abbatiello and Robinson, Mohammed Hurabi and Lars Zeepvat face charges of corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and dealing in unlawful activities. Robert Zanolla is charged with conspiracy and the criminal use of communication facilities.
Additional Charges and University Response
Eight additional defendants, described as “student-aged,” are charged with misdemeanors related to possession and drug paraphernalia. These individuals include Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Kaden Howe, Connor Hurleigh, Seth Beardsley, Kyle Ridpath, Daniel Price, and Charles Wiseman.
Thomas Robinson’s father, Paul Robinson, stands accused of felony tampering and hindering the investigation.
Penn State’s Reaction
Penn State University has taken action in response to these charges. The Delta Upsilon fraternity is under interim suspension pending the university’s investigation. Andrea Dowhower, vice president for Student Affairs, stated that such criminal activities and hazing have no place at the institution and stressed the university’s commitment to cooperating with law enforcement.
The Sigma Chi fraternity, not affiliated with Penn State’s recognized organizations, was also implicated in the activities.
Fraternity’s Position on Allegations
Delta Upsilon’s Executive Director, Justin Kirk, stated that those involved with the chapter who were implicated have faced disciplinary actions such as expulsion, suspension, or resignation. The fraternity is cooperating with ongoing investigations.
