Oprah Winfrey, a renowned talk show host, recently distanced herself from Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz during an interview with Emmy Magazine. Winfrey played a significant role in helping both figures become prominent media personalities. However, they have since become known for their conservative political affiliations.
Reflecting on her earlier interactions with McGraw and Oz, Winfrey recalled how practical and supportive Dr. Phil was during her legal battle in the late 1990s. She shared that he accompanied her to trials, providing a grounded presence. McGraw’s political stance has drawn criticism, yet he has not endorsed any party officially. Despite this, he appeared at a Trump campaign rally and supported immigration enforcement activities.
Dr. Oz’s political journey included a Senate run in Pennsylvania, receiving endorsement from President Donald Trump. Despite his defeat by Sen. John Fetterman, Oz remains active in political circles. Winfrey explained that she invited Oz onto her show due to his ability to convey complex medical information in an understandable manner.
Winfrey emphasized that both Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz have forged their own paths, separate from her influence. She stated her intention was to showcase their expertise, which she found valuable.
Despite her own political engagement, Winfrey maintains relationships across political affiliations, with Curtis Houck of the Media Research Center noting her ties to progressive figures and movements.
While Winfrey continues to advocate for causes aligned with her views, Houck believes Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz should have the freedom to express their own political perspectives.
