Stephen A. Smith Criticizes NABJ for ‘Thumbs Down’ Award

ESPN host and political commentator Stephen A. Smith openly criticized the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) for granting him a “Thumbs Down” award. He expressed his discontent during a rant on his show, labeling the action as a “personal hit job.” This award was conferred at the NABJ gala in Atlanta, citing Smith’s criticism of notable Black women as the reason.

Smith voiced his disappointment, stating that a journalism organization failed to practice journalism in their critique. He argued that calling him out for disparaging Black women without contacting him first lacked integrity. Smith specifically addressed NABJ President Errin Haines, questioning why no direct communication occurred if the organization held serious concerns.

The commentator speculated that the award related to his critiques of Black female political figures, like Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Despite reaching out to discuss these allegations with Haines, Smith noted the conversation was unproductive.

Following the incident, Smith detailed a conversation with Haines that compounded his frustration. He recounted her preference for a private discussion prior to any public debate, which he refused after public accusations had been made.

Despite his indignation, Smith emphasized his continued support for NABJ. He credited the organization’s job fair from over 30 years ago for his career start, distinguishing his issue as being with a specific decision by some board members, not the entire group or its mission.

An editor at the conservative Media Research Center commented on the award, suggesting a disconnect between journalist organizations and the public. He argued that Smith rightly criticized them for what he deemed a misguided approach.

Fox News Digital sought a response from NABJ but did not receive one at the time. The NABJ’s presentation video, shared by Washington Association of Black Journalists President Phil Lewis, highlighted Smith’s reputation for disparaging Black women across various fields and claimed his remarks conflicted with the NABJ’s commitment to fair and inclusive representation of Black communities.
