Debates over which city or team boasts the most passionate NFL fanbase have persisted for years. Some cities are well-known for their die-hard fans, especially in the National Football League (NFL).
Philadelphia often comes to mind. Eagles fans are known for their intense devotion. On the East Coast, New York and Boston also share this fervent dedication to sports. Chicago Bears enthusiasts pack Soldier Field regardless of the weather or team performance. In the South, particularly Texas, football holds significant importance. High school games attract thousands to their large stadiums.
Recently, Nielsen aimed to answer this question with its “Local NFL fandom index.” This index evaluates the fan engagement in all 30 NFL markets. Metrics include apparel purchases, interest levels, game attendance, betting intentions, social media activity, radio listenership, streaming habits, and TV viewership. Yet, how each metric is defined or weighed remains unclear.
Nielsen’s report reveals that smaller or mid-market teams often show the greatest fan interest. This trend reflects fewer entertainment alternatives. Smaller markets like Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland have strong fan bases. This is evident through local radio, TV engagement, and game attendance relative to market size.
The following is Nielsen’s ranking of the top NFL markets based on fan engagement:
- Buffalo (208)
- Kansas City (194)
- Green Bay / Appleton (172)
- Cincinnati (160)
- Philadelphia (151)
- Pittsburgh (148)
- Baltimore (144)
- Detroit (141, tied with New Orleans)
- New Orleans (141, tied with Detroit)
- Cleveland / Akron (134)
- Minneapolis / St. Paul (133)
- Denver (127)
- Jacksonville (126)
- Seattle / Tacoma (122)
- Nashville (120)
- Charlotte (117)
- Indianapolis (116)
- Houston (114)
- Dallas / Ft. Worth (112)
- Chicago (111)
- Boston (107, tied with Washington, D.C.)
- Washington, D.C. (107, tied with Boston)
- Las Vegas (104)
- Atlanta (103)
- Phoenix (101)
- Tampa / St. Petersburg (100)
- San Francisco / Oakland / San Jose (97)
- Miami / Ft. Lauderdale (87)
- Los Angeles (86)
- New York (85)
Nielsen highlights that smaller markets thrive due to less competition. Factors such as weather in the Midwest boost local football interest. High local television viewership is seen in cities like Cincinnati, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Buffalo, and Kansas City. Detroit and Green Bay’s top rankings in merchandise purchases reflect the Lions’ recent success and Green Bay’s consistency.
Bigger markets like Miami, LA, San Francisco, Tampa, and New York face challenges. These include competition from other entertainment and sports teams. Despite a large number of transplants, Philadelphia ranks among the top five. Philadelphia doesn’t lead any single metric but shines in overall analysis.
Winning is crucial. Boston’s rank benefits from the Patriots’ success. Kansas City surpasses similar markets due to the Chiefs’ strong performance. Buffalo stands at the top, supported by recent playoff streaks with Josh Allen.
With this index, Buffalo fans, known as Bills Mafia, can assert they’re the best in the NFL using this data. While they lack a Super Bowl victory, they hold strong fan engagement. Ian Miller from OutKick discusses these findings.
