Turmoil in Syria: The Death of Mohammad Ghamira Sparks Outcry and Demands for Accountability

The recent death of Mohammad Ghamira, a young man with a severe medical condition, has reignited painful memories of torture and abuse in Syrian detention centers. Ghamira, who was buried in his hometown of al-Haffah, Latakia province, reportedly endured harsh treatment by Syrian security forces before his death.

Public Outcry and Calls for Justice

Syrians have taken to social media and the streets, demanding answers about Ghamira’s death. His case has highlighted ongoing concerns about abuses in detention centers, even after the fall of former President Bashar Assad in December 2024. During Assad’s rule, human rights organizations documented mass executions and severe mistreatment of detainees.

Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s government has promised accountability in Ghamira’s case. However, rights groups warn that such abuses are not isolated.

Ghamira’s Background and Condition

Ghamira, a 29-year-old father of two, was a former volunteer with the White Helmets civil defense organization. He suffered from hemophilia, which impairs the blood’s ability to clot. Despite warnings to the police about his condition, Ghamira was allegedly beaten while in custody following an accusation of theft.

Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, confirmed Ghamira died from complications related to his condition. The police chief in al-Haffah had been informed of his hemophilia but failed to prevent further harm.

Investigation and Official Response

The Syrian interior ministry has launched an investigation, detaining seven personnel for questioning. Ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba acknowledged some deficiencies in police departments but emphasized that improvements were underway.

Watchdog Reports and Analysis

The U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic recently reported on torture and ill-treatment in Syrian detention facilities. Practices included beatings, electric shocks, mock executions, and sexual violence.

A statement from the Syrians for Truth and Justice highlighted ongoing abusive practices. The organization reported that severe beatings and other forms of torture continue to occur, although not as part of a centralized system akin to Assad’s regime.

Continued Concern Among Syrians

The recurrence of abusive practices under the new government has disturbed many Syrians. Families for Freedom, advocating for the relatives of detainees, stressed that Ghamira’s case is a painful reminder of past atrocities and that such occurrences must not be tolerated.
