James Carville, a well-known Democratic strategist, responded to remarks made by Oliver Larkin, a socialist candidate aiming to challenge a mainstream Democratic congressman in the Florida primary elections. Larkin, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, suggested that Carville should step aside for new ideas.
Carville, famous for his role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential victory, dismissed Larkin’s comments by labeling him as a typical ‘motor mouth’ among DSA members. Carville’s stance comes in reaction to a series of far-left and socialist victories in recent primaries, which he criticizes as a dilution of the party’s core values.
“They’re a bunch of silly people… a pack of fools,” Carville commented, voicing his opinion on the influx of far-left candidates winning primaries.
Larkin, 33, previously worked on Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign and is the sole DSA-endorsed candidate in a competitive district in the current election cycle. He runs against Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz in Florida’s newly formed 25th Congressional District.
Rep. Moskowitz, seeking re-election, enjoys support from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and backing from pro-Israel group AIPAC. In contrast, Larkin is supported by figures like political streamer Hasan Piker.
Emphasizing his goal, Larkin stated, “Democratic socialism can win in any district, in any race, for any office across the country.” He expressed pride in representing the DSA on the campaign trail.
Larkin also noted a shift in leadership within the Democratic Party, challenging figures like Carville, “They’re seeing their power over the Democratic Party establishment wane.” Larkin warned against alienating socialist-leaning voters, suggesting their importance in upcoming elections.
