The band ZZ Top has confirmed the death of their longtime drummer, Frank Beard, at the age of 77. Beard passed away at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, while in hospice care, surrounded by family.
Beard’s death was announced by the band on Monday. Although no immediate cause of death was given, his publicist confirmed his hospice status at the time of passing.
Frank Beard was a founding member of ZZ Top, joining forces with guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill in 1969. Following Dusty Hill’s death in 2021, his position was filled by longtime bass technician Elwood Francis upon Hill’s advice.
In a reflection on Beard’s legacy, Gibbons shared on social media, “Elwood and I lost a great friend today. He was an innovative drummer and a true son of Texas. Frank’s backbeat was essential to our success.”

The band announced the cancellation of their two upcoming shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. However, they plan to resume the tour at Austin City Limits. The venue is a special place for the band, described as “a second home” by them.
Further updates are anticipated as this story develops.
