Ukraine Faces Call for Elections Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukraine’s Political Tensions

On August 19, 2026, former Ukrainian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov urged for elections despite the ongoing war with Russia. This call represents the first significant challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s authority since the conflict began.

Martial Law and Calls for Democracy

With the imposition of martial law, initiated when Russian forces invaded in February 2022, elections have been prohibited. However, in a YouTube video, Fedorov asserted that democracy “cannot be held hostage by Russia,” urging for a “legal, safe and realistic mechanism” to renew Ukraine’s democratic processes amidst the ongoing war. Fedorov emphasized Ukraine’s struggle to remain a free European state as a primary motivation.

Fedorov’s Departure and Public Reaction

Fedorov’s departure from his position last month came after helping devise strategies employing drones and robots to counteract the Russian military. His dismissal in mid-July arose from a conflict with Zelenskyy’s top general, Oleksandr Syrskyi. Thousands protested Fedorov’s removal, highlighting his respected status among Ukrainians.

Proposed Election Challenges

Fedorov acknowledged the difficulties of conducting elections in a war zone, such as ensuring participation for soldiers and displaced individuals. Despite these challenges, he maintained that complexity does not equate to impossibility.

In a recent CBS News interview, Fedorov highlighted the public protests as a testament to Ukrainians’ support for democratic values, underlining Ukraine’s battle for freedom. Although he did not detail his plans if elections are held, he has expressed a willingness to return as defense minister.
