Gronkowski Shares Insights on Drake Maye’s Potential NFL Growth

Rob Gronkowski, former New England Patriots tight end, discussed the potential impact quarterback Drake Maye could have in the NFL. He highlighted how pairing with elite receiver AJ Brown might elevate Maye’s game.

This offseason, the Patriots made significant changes to their roster. Stefon Diggs was waived after the Super Bowl LXI defeat, and AJ Brown, a former Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowler, was signed. Gronkowski emphasized Brown’s ability to benefit Maye’s development due to his unique skill set.

“Brown reminds me of myself, but in the wide receiver spot. He’s a bigger body who uses his size to get open despite coverage,” Gronkowski said. “This year, Drake Maye has an opportunity to place the ball where AJ Brown can make plays using his size and abilities.” His comments were made during an interview with Sports Illustrated.

Gronkowski eagerly anticipates Maye’s growth, drawing parallels to his own connection with Tom Brady. “Can Maye do what Brady did for me and throw AJ Brown open when covered? If yes, it will elevate the offense greatly,” he added.

Last season, Maye had an impressive sophomore year, achieving 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. He led in QBR with a score of 77.1 and topped quarterbacks in passer rating at 113.5.

AJ Brown’s arrival follows his challenging season with the Eagles, marked by rumors of discord. Nonetheless, Brown accumulated 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. His new role with the Patriots offers a fresh start and the chance to excel with Maye’s youthful talent.

Brown reunites with his former Tennessee Titans coach, Mike Vrabel, and plays under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel, whom Gronkowski believes will optimize Brown’s use in the Patriots’ strategy.

The Patriots aim to excel in the AFC, facing strong competition from the Buffalo Bills led by Josh Allen, the Baltimore Ravens with Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. A solid Maye-Brown combination might enhance their competitiveness, surpassing previous seasons.
