Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio believes that many Americans are eager for the progressive vision promoted by some leaders within the Democratic Party’s socialist wing. During his appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” de Blasio emphasized the appeal of leaders such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who address issues of affordability and challenge the political status quo.
“There are specific leaders emerging from DSA who provide a vision that resonates with many people,” de Blasio stated. He mentioned Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez, and Mamdani as figures who tap into the frustration with current politics by focusing on affordability. “These leaders are pointing in a specific direction, and there’s a reason they’re winning,” he added.
De Blasio, despite not identifying as a socialist or a member of the DSA, voiced support for parts of the movement’s agenda. He highlighted policies like ending the war in Iran, implementing Medicare for All, and increasing taxes on the wealthy. According to de Blasio, these address voters’ concerns about affordability, saying, “Progressive candidates are winning because they discuss raising wages and lowering healthcare costs. Ending the war in Iran will ease gasoline prices.”
Besides affordability, de Blasio called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), advocating for a new agency. “We need a secure border but should abolish ICE and create an agency that ensures security without causing violence in cities,” he argued. He also supported a “path to legalization” for undocumented immigrants without violent or serious criminal records.
The demand for progressive policies within certain Democratic circuits reflects ongoing debates about the party’s ideological future and direction.
