A Chinese national living in Massachusetts has been arrested for allegedly impersonating another Chinese national to register and vote in the 2024 presidential election. Federal prosecutors assert that Yupeng Sun, 33, from Andover, also reported the alleged victim to immigration authorities for illegal voting.
Sun faces charges for one count of fraudulent voter registration and one count of fraudulent voting, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. The criminal complaint indicates that Sun admitted during a July interview to registering the victim to vote and casting a ballot using the man’s identity. When shown the victim’s voter registration information, Sun affirmed, “I tell you the truth, I register.”
An anonymous tip accusing a Massachusetts permanent resident of illegal voting in the 2024 presidential election included a screenshot of the victim’s voter registration status. After investigators presented Sun with a photograph of the early voting ballot envelope from Malden City Hall, dated October 31, 2024, Sun allegedly stated, “I used his name to vote.” Massachusetts voter records confirm the acceptance of the ballot cast under the victim’s name for the presidential election.
Sun previously rented a room from the victim and his family in Malden. Investigators allege that Sun impersonated both the victim and his wife in immigration documents, urging them to surrender their legal permanent resident status. Upon returning from an international trip in June 2024, the couple had their green cards confiscated and were placed into removal proceedings. An immigration judge reinstated their legal permanent resident status in January 2026, deeming their testimony credible and supported by forensic evidence that they did not sign the forms.
Federal investigators reveal that Sun later submitted anonymous tips to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, accusing the victim of illegal voting. Sun reportedly admitted sending the tips during interviews. He expressed, “I went to post office and, uh, to report the father vote.”
Sun is a citizen and national of China who entered the U.S. in September 2020 on a B-2 tourist visa that expired in March 2021. He has deferred action status from a U-Visa application submitted in February 2022. Prosecutors assert that Sun unlawfully voted using another person’s identity during early voting for the 2024 presidential election.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office, but no immediate response was received. Each voter fraud charge entails a maximum sentence of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Sun could face deportation after serving the sentence.
U.S. Attorney Leah Foley and Jeff Grimming, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, announced the charges. The Lexington and Andover police departments contributed to the investigation. The allegations in the court documents remain claims until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
