Bass and Raman Spar Over Key Issues in First Mayoral Debate

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman faced off in their first debate since the June primary, engaging in sharp exchanges over issues including homelessness and public safety. During the debate hosted by the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, Bass criticized Raman for difficulty in collaborative work and claimed she had missed thousands of votes.

Raman responded by defending her choice to hire the Fight Agency for campaign ads, despite controversy surrounding the firm’s past connections. Bass faced criticism for her former advisor’s crisis consulting for a company linked to a warehouse fire.

Bass Accusations and Raman’s Defense

Bass accused Raman of intellectually handling city issues akin to running lectures rather than taking decisive action. Raman, an MIT graduate, argued against this critique and highlighted her urban planning background.

Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV personality, shared his commentary on social media, criticizing both candidates. With the debate’s Zoom stream reaching full capacity, public radio broadcasted the discussion.

Bass and Raman’s Closing Arguments

Bass emphasized her achievements in creating affordable housing and public safety measures during her tenure. Raman criticized Bass’ leadership, describing the city as “rudderless” and urged for higher expectations and change.

Raman also questioned LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell’s responses to federal immigration raids, noting a lack of protection for immigrant communities, while Bass pointed out the ease of replacing leadership if necessary.

During the debate, Bass claimed compensating for Raman’s lack of responsiveness to constituents and pointed to voter dissatisfaction with her administration. Raman defended her team’s diligence and criticized fiscal mismanagement under Bass, citing declining municipal services.

Fiscal and Policy Confrontations

Raman criticized the city’s spending, including the police budget and a convention center expansion she viewed as politically motivated. Bass defended the need for the convention center to attract events.

On making Los Angeles business-friendly, Bass outlined initiatives like appointing a film czar and fast-tracking housing development. Raman suggested tax credits for film jobs to retain industry presence.

The debate showcased Raman’s readiness to engage, minimizing critiques of Bass while maintaining focus. Bass targeted Raman’s absences from council meetings, questioning her commitment.

Police Hiring and Mayor Bass’ Challenges

Bass condemned Raman’s “defund the police” stance, citing it as irresponsible, whereas Raman criticized the police budget’s contribution to deficits. Bass faced setbacks amid rising homelessness numbers but sought to counter the narrative with her accomplishments.

In the run-up to the debate, Bass out-raised Raman significantly. The debate served as an opportunity for both candidates to outline their strategies for managing political challenges and sway public opinion ahead of the general election.
