Inside an Oklahoma City Gym Promoting a ‘Lust-Free’ Workout Environment

Jeff Hambrecht, the proprietor of Proverbs 27:17, a Christian gym in Oklahoma City, is taking a novel approach to exercise by removing ‘temptation’ from workouts. This men-only fitness center has sparked both support and criticism.

In gyms across the nation, millions endure the bustling environment of co-ed facilities. However, some men find this distracting and seek out new alternatives. Hambrecht explained to Fox News Digital that maintaining a ‘lust-free’ zone is merely a fraction of the gym’s mission.

“The idea of a lust-free gym, it’s not like we’re a bunch of guys who can’t control ourselves and we stay indoors. If you’re an alcoholic and trying to escape that circle, you’d avoid drugs and alcohol. Lust is no different,” Hambrecht highlighted.

Hambrecht’s journey involved overcoming addiction to drugs, alcohol, and pornography through faith. His gym aims to help men build community and open dialogues on issues like mental health.

“There’s no place for guys to just be vulnerable and get closer to God alongside others with similar goals,” Hambrecht noted. “We eliminate distractions to let men focus on what’s important. It’s about viewing relationships and life from a biblical perspective.”

Kim Abt, owner of PWRGRLS gym in California, a women-only facility, commented on the fairness of single-gender gyms. “Guys complain about distractions. I respect their need for a specific environment,” she stated.

Abt reported that her gym’s classes are popular, with many clients joining due to feelings of intimidation at mixed-gender gyms. She mentioned past harassment as a significant reason women prefer single-gender spaces.

Brad Jensen, known as “thesoberbodybuilder,” shared his perspective on Proverbs 27:17’s concept. He understands the need for gender-specific gyms and suggests perhaps implementing a dress code grounded in Christian values rather than excluding women entirely.

“I see outfits that push boundaries, making others uncomfortable,” Jensen said. “That’s crossing a line, and if it makes half the gym uncomfortable, we need adjustments,” he concluded.
