Atlanta Mayor Criticizes DNC Over 2028 Convention Decisions

Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for not including Atlanta in the shortlist of cities to host the 2028 presidential convention. Dickens accused party leaders, especially DNC Chairman Ken Martin, of neglecting Black voters and the South.

Dickens argued that the DNC’s choice to shortlist Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia sends a message that the South, particularly its Black voters, is being undervalued. Other southern Democrats share this concern. Recently, Christale Spain, South Carolina’s Democratic Party Chair, emphasized the future potential of Southern states, urging the national party not to take Black voters for granted.

“They are afraid to leave their comfort zone and blind to the fact that the South is the answer,” Dickens expressed, accusing the party of repeatedly choosing other regions over the South.

The DNC highlighted its broader efforts in the South and pointed to its recent decision to place South Carolina at the forefront of its 2028 nominating calendar. The process will start in South Carolina on January 22, 2028, a move highlighting the party’s commitment to racial diversity.

The DNC announced Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia as the final contenders for the 2028 convention, excluding Atlanta and Chicago from the shortlist. This selection followed an evaluation of factors such as partnerships with local communities, logistical capabilities, fundraising potential, and alignment with Democratic values.

DNC Chair Ken Martin explained that Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia each presented strong bids for the convention. Although the DNC has made efforts in the South, Dickens insisted that choosing Atlanta would have better underscored the party’s commitment to the region and its strategic importance.

Atlanta, last hosting the Democratic convention in 1988, positioned itself as a significant Democratic stronghold in the South. Despite the DNC’s decision, Dickens emphasized the potential of southern states and the strategic importance of engaging Black voters to ensure future victories.
