Max Verstappen Commits to Red Bull Until 2030 Amid Speculation

Max Verstappen had seriously contemplated leaving Formula 1, however, he has now committed to Red Bull Racing for four more years. This announcement comes just before the Dutch Grand Prix, putting an end to speculations about a possible move to another team or retiring from the sport.

Despite Red Bull’s difficulty in matching Mercedes this season, and Verstappen’s own concerns over the increasing reliance on electrical power in the 2026 cars, he is optimistic about the future. Conversations with F1 and FIA convinced him that improvements are being made towards better racing conditions. The new contract, extending until 2030, could also involve a return to V8 engines.

“Even if I’m not entirely happy with how the package is, I still love racing, this is still the pinnacle of motorsport, so I still want to be here,” said Verstappen.

Verstappen admitted that he was closer to considering retirement than switching teams. Seeing out the contract would mean Verstappen spends 15 seasons with Red Bull, potentially setting a record for the longest driver-team partnership in F1 history. This decision comes amid strong support for team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over from the founding boss Christian Horner last year.

Mekies pointed out Verstappen’s significant role in shaping the team’s strategic decisions, emphasizing that he is much more than just the fastest driver. Verstappen, recognized as one of the top F1 drivers at 28, is yet to win a race this season. The 71-time race winner hasn’t gone winless since 2015.

The Reasons for Speculation

Verstappen’s prior contract extended until 2028 but included performance-related clauses that stirred speculation about a potential early departure. Having joined F1 with Red Bull at 17 as the youngest driver, he holds onto that record. Nevertheless, there have been tensions, particularly after the departure of key figures like Horner and Adrian Newey.

Concerns over safety arose after rear wing faults led to high-speed crashes this season. Despite links to McLaren and meetings with its management, McLaren CEO Zak Brown confirmed the team’s commitment to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Mercedes also expressed some interest.

“Drivers talk with different teams, teams talk with different drivers. Everyone has to just see what their cards are,” Mercedes’ George Russell said, reaffirming his security within his team.

Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz Jr. was considered a potential replacement for Verstappen but recently signed with Williams.
