Early Harvest Challenges Champagne Winemakers Amid Climate Change

In Hautvillers, France, champagne producers are swiftly harvesting grapes due to the earliest recorded harvest in the region. Extreme heat and drought accelerated ripening, leaving winemakers with a narrow window to preserve the sparkling wine’s quality.

Early Morning Harvest

Harvesters start working at 6:30 a.m. on the picturesque hillsides of Hautvillers, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. Alexandre Gobillard, head of production at Gobillard & Fils, finds this mid-August harvest unprecedented. “This is historic in Champagne,” said Gobillard. “I’ve been working here for 30 years. When I started, my father would say, ‘Go on vacation on August 15.’ It’s now August 18, and we’re fully into the harvest. We’ve never seen anything like this.” Gobillard represents the fourth generation working on the family’s vineyards, cultivating 40 hectares and producing about 1.5 million bottles annually.

Effects of a Changing Climate

The official Champagne harvest began between August 12 and 17 this year, depending on the area and grape variety, which is roughly a month earlier than usual. A late-March frost followed an early bud burst due to mild temperatures, reducing potential yield. This was followed by four heatwaves, an unprecedented occurrence, Gobillard noted.

Sun-scorched grapes turned brown, reducing volume more than quality by about 10%. Early harvests have become more frequent as temperatures rise, affecting Champagne and other French wine regions. In neighboring Italy, extreme heat also drives sparkling wine producers to harvest earlier and gather grapes at night.

Challenges for Winemakers

David Chatillon, president of the Union of Champagne Houses, acknowledged this year’s weather will clearly reduce yields. “But it’s not just the drought,” said Chatillon. “We lost 43% of potential production due to spring frosts, and drought exacerbated the issue.” He noted the industry has focused on climate change for 25 years, prompting investment in research and innovation to adapt, including developing disease-resistant, late-ripening grape varieties.

Gobillard has seen the impact over generations. “My grandfather’s generation harvested 100 days after flowering, my father 90 days, and today we’re down to 80,” he explained. “We’ll have to change our habits.” Record summer temperatures compressed the ripening period further, reaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of Champagne in June.

“The vine needs water to live,” said Gobillard. “Water was drawn from the grapes to keep the vine alive, resulting in much higher sugar concentration. That’s why ripening occurred much faster.” As his daughter operated the press, Gobillard watched the first juice of the year flow with a mix of excitement and concern.

Logistical and Traditional Challenges

Early harvests challenge traditional practices where grapes are hand-picked, while some workers are still on summer vacation, and transportation delays arise. Gobillard hopes to complete the harvest in nine days, requiring about 120 workers, mainly from France and Poland. “It really changes how we view traditional Champagne methods,” said Geoffrey Bonnet-Gobillard, commercial director. “Manual harvesting involves many challenges: housing, feeding, recruiting. It’s tough, especially with early August harvests.” He added that pressures might lead producers to reconsider entrenched practices as agricultural machinery advances.

The family sells most of their champagne in European markets, including Britain, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and West Africa, with smaller volumes going to the U.S. and Asia.

Global Industry Impacts

According to the 2026 sector report by the Comité Champagne, 266.1 million champagne bottles were shipped last year, generating 5.7 billion euros ($6.6 billion) in sales. Exports accounted for 56.5% of shipments. Champagne represented around 8% of global sparkling wine consumption by volume but 31% by value.

The sector supports roughly 30,000 direct jobs and requires about 100,000 seasonal workers for harvesting. Despite this year’s tough conditions, Gobillard found the grapes encouraging. “I’m very pleased with what I’m seeing,” assured Gobillard. “We worried the drought would leave us with light clusters, but we’re satisfied with these parcels. The quantity should be sufficient, and the quality will be there.”

But there’s little time to lose. “It’s time to cut them. We’ll need to move quickly,” Gobillard stated.
