The Washington Post must now reinstate Karen Attiah, a former columnist who was dismissed last year following her social media remarks regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
According to the arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa, who led the legal proceedings, The Post lacked substantial cause for Attiah’s dismissal and breached her labor agreement. Espinosa stated, “The Washington Post failed to establish the grievant engaged in gross misconduct,” the The New York Times reported.

Attiah expressed relief over the ruling and reiterated her position that her firing was unwarranted. She emphasized the arbitrator’s decision as confirmation that she was fulfilling her responsibilities as an opinion writer.
A spokesperson from The Washington Post acknowledged the arbitration process but refrained from further comments. Attiah did not respond immediately to requests from Fox News Digital for comment.
Attiah’s controversial posts about Kirk appeared on the platform Bluesky, drawing significant criticism. After Kirk’s assassination, she wrote, “Refusing to tear my clothes and smear ashes on my face in performative mourning for a White man that espoused violence is… not the same as violence.” In another post, she criticized the American insistence on “perform care, empty goodness and absolution for White men who espouse hatred and violence.”
Her posts included a misattributed quote later clarified by a segment from “The Charlie Kirk Show,” where Kirk discussed affirmative action and made controversial statements.
Amid backlash, Attiah revealed her termination was termed “unacceptable” and citing “gross misconduct.” Her pursuit of legal action resulted in the recent arbitration victory. Fox News Digital attempted to reach Talking Points USA for further comment.
