San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York faced legal issues over the weekend in Ohio. He was arrested and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. Initially, York was charged with engaging in prostitution, but prosecutors amended the charge to disorderly conduct.
York’s possession of criminal tools was linked to using his phone to respond to an undercover online prostitution ad, according to prosecutors. He was arrested at a mobile home community in East Palestine, Ohio, close to his birthplace in Youngstown.
Following his arrest, York was released after posting a $5,000 bond. He received a one-day jail sentence for both offenses, with credit for one day already served. A fine totaling $1,150 was imposed. Additional legal proceedings resulted in the return of York’s cellphone and the donation of $160 seized during the arrest to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of his plea agreement. York also completed an online course as part of the resolution.
Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino remarked that plea agreements are common in prostitution-related cases, noting, “Each case is looked at individually and for specific facts of the conduct, what evidence the police provide, and input from the arresting officer. You also have to factor in criminal history of the defendant, and whether or not they have committed these types of offenses in the past, and importantly, what the judges will allow.”
The NFL recognized the arrest and declared it would review the matter under its personal conduct policy. Violations could result in fines or suspensions for owners. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft similarly faced investigation after a 2019 arrest in Florida, but charges were eventually dropped due to police misconduct concerning surveillance.
The 49ers issued a statement, choosing not to comment further on the legal matter: “As this is a legal matter, which has been resolved, we will not be providing any further comment at this time.”
York assumed control of the 49ers’ day-to-day operations in 2008 and became the principal owner in 2024. Under his leadership, changes in coaching and management have brought consistent success, with Coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch steering the team to Super Bowl appearances in recent years. The building of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, which hosted major events like the Super Bowl and World Cup, was overseen by York.
