Metea Valley senior Charlie Larson consistently puts his team first, even if it means changing his position. Larson, who was the Mustangs’ quarterback last season, achieved significant stats, passing for 1,520 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushing for 642 yards and eight scores. He was named the team’s offensive MVP.
Although he played quarterback in his freshman and sophomore years, he did not stand out as a star. With first-year coach Patrick Sheehan having limited options, Larson assumed the quarterback role last season. Sheehan remembers, “Charlie was a warrior last year. He stepped up to play quarterback and adapted well to our running offense.” Larson’s commitment earned Sheehan’s admiration, describing Larson as “the soul of our team.”
While Larson has ample experience as a safety, he had limited experience as a receiver. However, when junior quarterback Iggy Amorrortu transferred, Sheehan asked Larson to switch to receiver. Larson accepted the change readily, stating, “I guess I’ll get receiving gloves.”
Adapting quickly, Larson learned routes and catching within days. “He’s a natural athlete,” Sheehan remarked. Larson also bonded with Amorrortu, who appreciated Larson’s willingness to switch positions. “Since day one, he welcomed me,” Amorrortu shared. Working with Amorrortu, Larson embraced the change, saying, “It’s been fun growing that connection.”
In the season opener against St. Charles East, Larson showcased his skills with three receptions for 40 yards and played well defensively, including an interception. “Playing wide receiver is a whole new role,” Larson said, appreciating this different perspective of the game.
Despite the role change, Larson remains a strong defender. He made key plays, including starting an 87-yard drive that ended with a field goal by Ryan Lozowski, giving the Mustangs an early lead. Amorrortu praised Larson’s potential, suggesting improvements can be made with more practice.
Larson’s passion for football began with flag football and continued through tackle football in seventh grade. He aspires to play both offense and defense in college. “I’m confident in myself,” he stated, expressing his love for both roles.
Leading the team as a captain, Larson focuses on supporting his teammates. “I want to be someone they can go to and lift them up,” he said, reflecting on the positive influence his elders had on him. The team and coaches reciprocate Larson’s dedication, with Amorrortu affirming, “You won’t find another Charlie Larson anywhere.”
