Ongoing Construction at Orland Park Costco
Shoppers at the Orland Park Costco should prepare for construction activities continuing into the next year. The store is working on expanding its gas station while integrating a roundabout at the exit. This simultaneous work aims to streamline changes and minimize prolonged disruption.
Construction Details:
- Expanded gas station with plans to install 32 fuel pumps, offering potential for future growth.
- Relocation of the gas station west of Ravinia Avenue, away from the main store.
- Demolition of the current gas station and replacement with additional parking.
“We thought if they are all happening at the same time — yes, it is a bigger pain, but then we will come out of it and then be done with it — instead of one goes and the next comes and the next comes,” said Orland Park engineering director Khurshid Hoda.
Village Board Approval
Approximately a year ago, the Village Board authorized Costco’s expansion plans to address significant membership and sales growth at the 159th Street location, initially opened in 2006.
Hoda highlights the significance of the store, noting, “Our Costco store is number two in the state (in sales volume), and it might be number one after this gas station expands.”
Roundabout Integration
Costco plans to direct traffic through a newly constructed roundabout, facilitating smoother access to the gas station and 159th Street. This required adjustments from the original plan, which involved stop signs.
The roundabout was preferred over stop signs to provide a comprehensive solution for traffic management, accommodating both 18-wheelers and emergency vehicles.
Amazon Retail Center Development
Work is also progressing on the Amazon retail center located at the busy intersection of 159th Street and LaGrange Road. This includes the completion of the Ravinia Avenue extension, linking the retail center to the Costco through the roundabout.
Amazon Center Features:
- Nearly 230,000 square feet of retail space.
- Enhanced shopping experience utilizing in-store kiosks and mobile integrations.
- Dedicated parking areas for delivery drivers.
- Six-acre landscaped area with stormwater detention.
According to Katie Jahnke Dale, representing Amazon, “The retail space will likely be one of the first of its kind.”
Amazon aims to enhance customer experience by enabling in-store purchases through mobile devices or kiosks, and offering item pickup either at the front or designated parking spaces.
Projected completion is slated for late next year, aligning with construction timelines.
