Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Kelly Loeffler announced the formation of a Smaller War Plants Commission. This initiative aims to enhance support for smaller defense companies by providing expertise and funding.
Hegseth’s Statement: “Our objective is clear: President Trump is putting an end to reliance on foreign supply chains. This significant commitment will bolster the industrial base behind our formidable military. By supporting companies that supply our forces, we can outproduce and outsmart any adversary.”
Hegseth emphasized transforming industrial capabilities into long-term military advantages. This shift is expected to deter conflict, maintain peace, and demonstrate American strength. The new commission mirrors the 1942 Smaller War Plants Corporation, which aided small businesses producing war supplies during World War II.
Loeffler’s Contribution: “Our joint effort will greatly enhance funding for supply chain building, expansion, innovation, and workforce expansion. The time for offshoring power production to adversaries has ended.” Loeffler stated that small manufacturers make up 70% of the U.S. defense industrial base. The SBA manages nearly $500 billion in small business portfolios. “Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, our military will be supported by an agile industrial base, providing our warfighters with an asymmetric advantage,” Loeffler added.
