As of October 2026, Florida State University’s football coach, Mike Norvell, has not been dismissed. However, speculation about possible replacements has started to circulate. J.D. PicKell, a college football analyst, highlighted several coaches he would consider if the Seminoles’ head coaching position became available.
Among those mentioned is Kenny Dillingham, the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils. In a video on social media platform X, PicKell emphasized that, “Mike Norvell is cooked,” suggesting that Norvell’s time at FSU might be limited. Discussing Dillingham, PicKell expressed uncertainty about Dillingham’s interest but said, “I don’t know if he takes the job, but at least call Kenny Dillingham.”
PicKell speculated whether Dillingham might be tempted if Florida State offered him superior resources, even though Dillingham may currently have strong ties to Arizona State. Other coaches PicKell mentioned include Duke’s Manny Diaz, SMU’s Rhett Lashlee, and Memphis’ Charles Huff. Notably, Jimbo Fisher was absent from his list.
Recent performance concerns are adding pressure. The Seminoles’ record stands at 3-3 overall and 1-2 in ACC play following a 44-20 defeat to Louisville on October 9. After initially leading 14-0, Florida State was outscored 44-6 for the rest of the game. This marks the Seminoles’ 11th consecutive loss on the road. Under Norvell, the team’s performance in conference games has been troubling, with a 4-15 record over the last 19 matches.
The financial implications of replacing Norvell are significant. According to Pete Nakos from On3, Norvell’s buyout is estimated at approximately $51 million. Furthermore, the costs associated with hiring a new coaching staff could bring total expenses to around $100 million. Despite these costs, Nakos mentioned that a mid-season coaching change is not completely out of the question, although it seems unlikely.
Financial considerations are at the core of discussions about Dillingham. Nakos highlighted that Florida State currently lags behind the best-funded programs in the ACC. This financial gap has already led to the dismissal of the university’s athletic director, Michael Alford, earlier this fall.
Expectations for Norvell’s retention through 2027 are linked to performance targets. Decision-makers desire a 7-5 season or better. To qualify for postseason play, Florida State needs to secure three more wins from their upcoming games against teams like Miami, Clemson, Boston College, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, and Florida.
