Two years ago, Mya Donnelly joined Lincoln-Way Central’s varsity team as a freshman. She learned valuable lessons from the experienced players then. Now, as a junior and an outside hitter standing at 5-foot-11, she mentors younger team members. With freshman Erin Sammon and sophomores Leah Freiberg, Madison Rademacher, Tessa Garcia, and Zoey Terrell on varsity, Donnelly takes on a leadership role. ‘I had leaders who guided me, and now I get to lead,’ Donnelly remarked. ‘I remember being scared on varsity, but now I find it rewarding to teach.’
Donnelly’s growth is evident. She had 11 crucial kills in Lincoln-Way Central’s turnaround win against Chicago Christian. The team won 14-25, 25-14, 25-20 in New Lenox, marking their season opener with a victory. Ella Thompson contributed seven kills, while Terrell added four aces. Garcia and Isabella Bendoraitis supported with 21 combined assists. For Chicago Christian, Quinn Grevengoed led with 12 kills.
After a rough start in the first game with an 11-point deficit, Donnelly’s performance sparked a comeback. She energized the team by helping secure an 8-5 lead, gaining momentum. ‘I needed to lead with confidence,’ Donnelly explained. ‘My focus was hitting down the line effectively.’
Bendoraitis also excelled, delivering six consecutive service points, which included three aces, to close the second game. Thompson dominated the final game with four kills, and Terrell added three more aces. The nonconference match, held on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, saw Donnelly’s leadership positively impact the team’s dynamic.
Reflecting on the initial setback, Donnelly shared, ‘We struggled with serve-receive initially, but improved as we played. The bench was supportive, loud, which helped.’ The loss of senior players had posed uncertainties, but the team’s strong start was encouraging.
Donnelly played a key role in the victory. ‘Mya excelled in the second set; she’s vital to our win,’ Bendoraitis praised. ‘Her swing is probably the best on the team.’
Coach Amy Bernhard acknowledged the initial nerves but recognized the improved sets from Bendoraitis and Garcia. ‘Mya’s energy was pivotal. She acts like a senior in her role,’ Bernhard stated.
Donnelly’s volleyball journey began as a second grader, transitioning from cheerleading. ‘Cheerleading wasn’t for me, so my mom suggested volleyball,’ she shared. Her dedication extends beyond the court, emphasizing team unity. ‘Our off-court relationships strengthen us on the court.’
