A Florida jury convicted Mario Fernandez Saldana of first-degree murder and solicitation of murder, following an alleged plot linked to a complicated child custody situation. The case involved the death of Jared Bridegan, a Microsoft design manager who was ambushed in Jacksonville Beach.
Prosecutors argued that Bridegan’s murder was a result of conflict between him and his ex-wife over parenting and religious differences. Bridegan had been returning home with his young daughter, Bexley, when the incident occurred after dinner with his twins.
Complex Custody Dispute
The authorities suspect Bridegan’s former wife, Shanna Gardner, and her husband, Fernandez Saldana, orchestrated the murder. Testimonies highlighted these tensions, as Assistant State Attorney Christina Stifler stated, “He was unarmed, exposed, vulnerable” at the moment of his attack.
Defense attorney Jesse Dreicer argued Fernandez Saldana had no motive and emphasized that he gained no advantage from Bridegan’s death. The defense noted the couple’s estrangement, with Gardner relocating to Washington state after the murder.
The Alleged Conspirators
Henry Tenon, implicated as the gunman, had connections to Fernandez Saldana through a rental property. Tenon initially cooperated with authorities against Fernandez Saldana but later retracted this agreement.
Saldana received conviction after evidence, including financial transactions to Tenon and DNA findings, implicated him. Checks totaling $10,000 were found marked for unrelated work.
Aftermath and Impact
In response to the tragic events, Bridegan’s widow, Kirsten, initiated the Bridegan Foundation to support children experiencing police procedures. It aims to create a more understanding environment for young children involved in legal processes.
The trial of Gardner, whose family is associated with an arts-and-crafts enterprise, is slated for September. The outcomes may further explore the dynamics of this turbulent custody conflict.
“It was nasty. It was petty. It was not good on both sides,” emphasized the prosecutor about Bridegan and Gardner’s relationship.
