The incident occurred in the top of the sixth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the game scoreless, Crow-Armstrong took a significant lead from third base, eyeing a potential steal of home.
Arizona pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez responded with a quick pitch while Michael Busch was at the plate. Crow-Armstrong insisted that Rodriguez had balked, which would have granted him a free run to home, thus giving Chicago an advantage. He voiced his frustration loudly after the umpires conferred and ruled no balk had occurred.
Chris Coduto captured the moment when Crow-Armstrong and third base coach Quintin Berry confronted second base umpire Lance Barrett. Cubs manager Craig Counsell also stepped in to defuse the situation. Pete Crow-Armstrong expressed his frustration after the Cubs’ 2-0 defeat. “I saw four umpires miss a pretty obvious play,” he said. “Their job is to make the right calls, and they failed to do that.” Crew chief Alfonso Márquez later acknowledged the oversight, admitting that a balk should have been called.
Despite the intense exchange, no ejections occurred during the game. The Diamondbacks eventually broke the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth inning, adding a second run in the eighth, ensuring their victory. Crow-Armstrong contributed one of Chicago’s two hits in the game.
Chicago’s recent performance has been shaky, dropping four out of six games. Their lead in the National League Wild Card standings has shrunk to a mere two-game over the Philadelphia Phillies, who have been in strong form, winning eight of their last ten games.
