After a recent victory on the diamond, I’m shifting focus from baseball to assess some interesting WNBA matchups today. There’s a break from baseball due to limited appealing games, and attention is now on two significant WNBA contests.
Golden State Valkyries vs. New York Liberty
Despite being in only their second year, the Golden State Valkyries are one of the top WNBA teams this season. Typically, expansion teams face challenges, especially in the NBA and MLB. However, the Valkyries excel with a balanced team composition. Their scoring is distributed, with only three players averaging over 10 points per game, yet eight players score six or more points each game.
The New York Liberty started the season as favorites for the WNBA Championship but have struggled to consistently demonstrate their prowess. Despite having star athletes like Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu, they hold a .500 record on the road. However, at home, they’re strong, winning 13 out of 18 games with a victory margin averaging 13.5 points.
Currently on a solid streak, winning 10 of their last 13 games, the Liberty are in good form. Although the Valkyries have had success against them, I expect New York to utilize home court advantage to dodge a season sweep. Expect the Liberty to cover the -2.5 spread.
Washington Mystics vs. Phoenix Mercury
The Washington Mystics are not commonly seen as a storied franchise, but recent drafts have bolstered their lineup. Key players Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen have contributed significantly, with three scorers averaging above 15 points each game. This contrasts with the broader scoring style of the Valkyries.
Phoenix Mercury, on the other hand, have experienced a puzzling decline this season. Despite reaching the finals last year, they’ve struggled to a 13-25 record, performing poorly at home. Injuries to key players likely contribute, though they recently acquired Kelsey Plum at the trade deadline. However, persistent injury issues remain a concern.
With one team striving for a draft position and the other aimed at playoff contention, this matchup looks tilted in the Mystics’ favor. After a recent 10-point win against the Mercury, Washington is poised to repeat their success, covering the -3.5 spread.
