Tucker Carlson, previously a devoted supporter of President Donald Trump, has shifted his stance and now calls for Trump’s removal from office. Carlson cites concerns over the potential use of nuclear weapons in the conflict involving the U.S. and Iran.
On his show, Carlson expressed alarm at the prospect of nuclear escalation between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. He stated, “Any leader of any country who suggests first use of nuclear weapons has forfeited his right to lead. He has to be removed immediately. I think that’s just a fair standard.”
Carlson, a former Fox News host, had opposed earlier impeachment attempts against Trump, labeling them “absurd.” However, he perceives the possibility of using nuclear weapons as crossing a significant “red line.” He argues that such a threat requires an immediate response.
Attempts to reach the White House for comment by Newsweek on Friday night were unsuccessful.
Carlson also mentioned discussions within the Pentagon regarding tactical nuclear weapons. He accused Trump of suggesting nuclear action against Iran, citing a warning from April where Trump declared that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if U.S. demands were unmet. Carlson interpreted this as a potential nuclear threat.
Carlson’s Shift from Trump
The remarks highlight Carlson’s growing divide with Trump, rooted mainly in foreign policy disagreements. Carlson announced in June his break from the Republican Party, intending to aid in forming a third party. He emphasized nuclear war and artificial intelligence as the two greatest threats in history, criticizing authorities for their inaction.
Trump’s Nuclear Stance
Trump’s relationship with Iran has escalated scrutiny regarding nuclear rhetoric. He has warned against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons and used aggressive language concerning Iran’s non-compliance with U.S. demands.
In April, Trump threatened significant consequences if Iran failed to negotiate with the U.S. Despite ruling out nuclear weapon use later, questions persist over potential tactical nuclear action. Fox News reported no military options were off the table regarding Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility. Meanwhile, The Guardian reported no current consideration for tactical nuclear strikes.
Additionally, Trump suggested resuming nuclear weapon testing, halted since 1992. Though he aimed for “denuclearization” and “de-escalation,” he provided limited details on the testing plans.
