St. Charles North’s Dual Quarterback Strategy Yields Success

St. Charles North High School employs a dual quarterback system featuring sophomore Dashel Von Qualen and senior Landon Conroy. Both have been effective in their roles, contributing to the team’s strong start with a 2-0 record this season.

In their latest victory, a 56-21 win against South Elgin, Von Qualen demonstrated his explosive capabilities. He completed his first three passes for touchdowns and rushed for 96 yards on six carries. His performance included a 4-for-4 passing completion with 153 yards and a 35-yard rushing touchdown.

Conroy also played a significant role, finishing 4 of 6 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. He added another 45 yards and a touchdown on the ground. This shared responsibility allows each quarterback to utilize their strengths, effectively challenging opponents.

“It’s working out pretty well,” Conroy remarked, reflecting on the teamwork. “We’re both contributing to the team’s success. It’s more of a competitive advantage for us.”

Jameson Walters excelled in the game with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and two receptions totaling 78 yards, including a touchdown. Tommy Vendl scored both on a 1-yard run and a 71-yard reception.

The South Elgin team saw contributions from freshman Jeremiah Torres, who returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, and Carter McDonald, who had a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

Conroy and Von Qualen’s cooperation on the field exemplifies the team’s emphasis on selflessness, a core value as highlighted by Conroy. Head coach Rob Pomazak praises their ability to share roles, which amplifies the team’s offensive strategy.

“We’re very lucky to have both Landon and Dash,” Pomazak said. “Their roles offer us versatility without altering our approach. I’m proud of their commitment.”

Conroy initiated their recent match with a decisive 57-yard pass and soon after scored an 18-yard rushing touchdown. Von Qualen then took over, completing passes for touchdowns of 39, 35, and 71 yards.

Both quarterbacks recognize the significance of winning over individual positions. Von Qualen noted, “When two guys want to be the starter and are selfless, it strengthens the team. We’re here to win.”
