Highland senior defensive end Jace Harris made an immediate impact on Friday, disrupting Whiting’s offense with a tackle for a loss in the opening series. Known for his dual role, the 6-foot, 280-pound Harris also pressured the quarterback, resulting in an errant pass.
Harris commented, “I feel like I was doing really well getting off the ball on defense, closing my gap, making those tackles. I like how my O-line gave it their all, how my D-line gave it their all.” His determination reflects his commitment to the team, telling them, “I’m just trying to do as much as I can for my team.”
Harris played a significant role in Highland’s first victory with interim coach Jimmy McCormack, securing a 50-7 win. In his first season at Highland after transferring from Crete-Monee, Illinois, he recorded 54 tackles, including 12 for loss, earning a spot on the Class 4A junior all-state team. Against Whiting, Harris added three more tackles for loss to his record.
Coach McCormack praised Harris, saying, “Jace is a great player. He’s an incredible ballplayer for us. Seeing him bounce back from a rough start last week was really nice.” Previously a backup at Crete-Monee, Harris emerged as an all-conference defensive lineman, adding offensive duties last year. Adapting to his new role wasn’t without challenges. “It was hard, but it wasn’t too hard to get back into it,” Harris admitted. The support from coach Mac, coach Ben Geffert, and teammates eased his transition.
Junior quarterback Aaron McCormack, who ran for and threw touchdown passes, appreciates Harris’ contributions. “Jace is a great athlete. He brings a lot of energy no matter what — practice, weight room. He’s a big part of this program,” Aaron said.

Freshman wide receiver Jonathon Lee also stood out, returning the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. Despite a fumbled start, he navigated the field with agility, further catching two passes for 33 yards.
For Whiting, junior Julian Madrueno broke through Highland’s defenses with a 76-yard touchdown run, preventing Highland’s first shutout since the 2022 postseason.
Highland has maintained a winning streak over Whiting since the series was rekindled in 2021. This victory was meaningful for Jimmy McCormack, who anticipated a strong performance. He noted, “I wanted them to come out and compete for four quarters… The scoreboard indicates we did a nice job.”
McCormack celebrated his first win, attributing success to the team’s consistent physicality. He expressed pride in their effort, highlighting Harris’ crucial role. Harris summed up the team’s spirit, “It just feels great. I believed in my team, and they believed in me. When we come together, we do great.”
