The San Francisco Giants honored Jeff Kent by retiring his No. 21 jersey at Oracle Park on Saturday. This ceremony put the spotlight on Kent, who was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. A notable moment involved Barry Bonds, Kent’s former teammate.
Kent and Bonds were successful teammates in San Francisco but are often remembered for their on-field altercation in San Diego in 2002. During that incident, Bonds shoved Kent in the neck. On Saturday, the two men embraced and humorously reenacted that famous dugout scuffle.
Jeff Kent addressed fans before the Giants’ 7-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks and mentioned the 2002 show of emotions with Bonds, saying, “He and I have never gone out to dinner, but I’ll go to war with that guy any day of the week. If Bonds and I weren’t fighting in the dugout, we wouldn’t have what we’ve got, I guarantee you.”
Kent also took the opportunity to encourage Bonds, stating, “Barry, keep with it, brother, you got a shot, man,” regarding Bonds’ future chances at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Despite Bonds’ remarkable career, which includes 762 home runs, 14 All-Star appearances, and seven National League MVP awards, he has not been voted into the Hall of Fame due to his ties with performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds responded to his situation by focusing on family life, highlighting this shift in a 2024 statement during his Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame induction. Bonds’ No. 25 was retired by the Giants in 2018.
