Survivor of the Abbey Gate bombing, retired Marine Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews, shared his experiences on “The Big Weekend Show.” He detailed the challenges faced by U.S. Marines during the Afghanistan evacuation. Vargas-Andrews sustained severe injuries, losing his right arm and left leg in the August 26, 2021 attack.
Marines at Hamid Karzai International Airport were left struggling under overwhelming circumstances. Despite warnings, they had to improvise due to lack of preparation and support. Vargas-Andrews emphasized the difficult conditions they faced, describing the situation as chaotic.
“Everything we were doing while we were there was like figuring it out on the go.”
He stated that Marines had to share their food and water with refugees. Moreover, no processing tents were set up, complicating efforts to manage the crowd. Comparing the scene to “World War Z,” Vargas-Andrews conveyed the scale of the chaos and the inadequacy of preparations.
The evacuation lacked proactive measures despite intelligence warnings. Vargas-Andrews indicated multiple administrations and organizations contributed to this failure. He noted ongoing poor decision-making over decades as a major factor.
Despite recent recognition for Marines involved, Vargas-Andrews stressed the need for accountability. He considered these awards as positive but insufficient steps towards resolving the underlying issues.
