MichahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, passed away following a medical emergency during the team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.
A college spokesperson informed Newsweek that there were no known pre-existing conditions that would have hindered Barnett from playing. The exact nature or cause of the emergency remains unknown. William Jewell College shared the news on social media, expressing condolences and announcing a vigil on campus in his honor.
During the first quarter, Barnett encountered the emergency while on the sidelines. The game was suspended and eventually canceled as medical personnel attended to the situation. Barnett was taken to a local hospital but later was pronounced dead.
Barnett was a junior majoring in business administration. He was a significant player in the college’s football program, having previously led Liberty North High School to a Missouri state championship.
“The world lost a great person today! MicahJo was the ultimate human. He always put his teammates before himself and brought out the best in everyone around him. In times like this, we’re reminded how precious and fragile life truly is. Make sure to tell the ones around you how much you love them,” Greg Jones, former college football coach and Missouri Football Coach Hall of Famer, stated.
Barnett had a promising day; he scored a touchdown before the medical event disrupted the game. Witnesses described a somber atmosphere as those present tried to cope with the tragic turn of events.
In his time with the Cardinals, Barnett had become a leading rusher. Despite an injury-shortened season in 2025, he rushed for 366 yards and four touchdowns; his performance against Kentucky Wesleyan included 150 yards and three scores. Academically, Barnett earned recognition in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The team is set to play an away game at Kentucky Wesleyan College on September 12.
