Aida Burkins, a 22-year-old resident of Hemet, California, experienced a life-altering journey that unfolded unexpectedly during a trip to Chicago. As a devoted mother of two children, aged 1 and 3, her primary focus was on raising them. However, her priorities shifted dramatically after a surprising medical diagnosis.
Initial Symptoms and Diagnosis
In May 2025, Burkins encountered an unusual health issue after a flight to Chicago. Her ear failed to pop, a condition that continued to worsen upon her return home. She began experiencing bleeding that emerged from her nose under specific conditions, hearing loss, fatigue, and unexpected weight loss.
When she sought medical advice, her initial diagnosis was attributed to ‘altitude sickness,’ which she was assured would improve. Unfortunately, her situation only deteriorated further.
Seeking Specialist Help
Ultimately, Burkins’ physician identified a mass obstructing her Eustachian tube, leading to a referral to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. With her hearing progressively declining, she described her auditory experience as severely muffled, accompanied by persistent ringing. The ENT specialist noted an inflamed mass and enlarged adenoids.
Despite initial expectations, the possibility of cancer, while unlikely due to her young age, was not dismissed. Following a biopsy that left uncertainties, a second biopsy was performed to further investigate the swelling on the left side of her throat.
The doctor told me he had never seen anything quite like what I had going on,” Burkins said. “He couldn’t be sure it was cancer, but he said it was very suspicious.
Diagnosis of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
CT scans revealed the presence of numerous abnormalities, including lymph nodes at the base of her skull. Following additional surgery, the biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in February 2026. The revelation was devastating as Burkins feared the inability to see her children grow and thrive.
NPC is a rare head and neck cancer found in the nasopharynx, which is located behind the nose and above the back of the mouth. It is associated with symptoms such as persistent nasal congestion, nosebleeds, hearing loss, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. EBV infection, genetic predisposition, and environmental factors are linked to NPC, making it more common in certain regions outside the United States.
Treatment and Future Outlook
Following her diagnosis, Burkins has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy. As she nears the conclusion of her treatment, the prognosis appears optimistic, with signs of shrinking tumors and a positive response to therapy.
Burkins hopes her story will raise awareness about the indiscriminate nature of cancer, particularly among young individuals. She remains determined to fight the disease, inspired by her deep love for her children, who have served as her motivation and source of strength throughout her battle.
The path forward is filled with hope as Burkins looks forward to a cancer-free life, cherishing moments with her children and watching them grow.
