The New Orleans Saints have decided to maintain their current quarterback lineup as they reduce their roster to 53 players by Sunday. Tyler Shough will continue as the team’s starting quarterback. Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson will serve as his backups.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Saints intend to retain Spencer Rattler in their initial 53-man roster. The team has attracted trade interest for their third-year quarterback, but he remains planned to serve as the QB2 behind Shough.
“The Saints received trade interest in QB Spencer Rattler but plan to keep him, per sources,” Fowler shared on social media. “Rattler will serve as quality depth behind Tyler Shough, barring a change.”
Spencer Rattler, 25, was drafted by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, he played in 16 games and started in 14. His career stats include 2,903 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Rattler earns admiration among teammates. In January, Chris Olave, a Saints wide receiver, mentioned that Rattler merits another shot as a starting NFL quarterback.
“Spencer’s a great quarterback — I don’t believe he’s a backup quarterback in this league,” Olave said. “In today’s world, everyone is quick to assign blame if things aren’t perfect. I think Spencer has done well when he started as quarterback. He deserves another opportunity to start in the NFL.”
There seems to be no immediate chance for Rattler to start for another team this season, as the Saints hold their current stance. Rattler was initially the starter for the Saints before the 2025 season. However, by October 28, Shough secured the starting role.
Last season, Shough achieved a 5-4 record as a starter, with a completion rate of 67.6 percent, totaling 2,384 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
