NBA legend Charles Barkley has publicly criticized the inclusion of transgender athletes in the WNBA, asserting that the league should be exclusively for women. This topic has sparked discussions among sports commentators and athletes alike.
During a segment of ‘Outnumbered,’ Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, former NBA players, were highlighted for their ineligibility in the WNBA draft. Emily Compagno, a co-host of the show, added her perspective to the ongoing debate.
One of the central figures in this discussion is Julie Tetart, a transgender basketball player from France. Tetart has earned attention for her impressive performance with Monaco, boasting an average of 20 points and 20 rebounds per game in the French second division. Despite the WNBA’s self-proclaimed inclusive policies, Tetart has not yet received an invitation to join the league.
Sara Crudo and Martina Bestagno, former teammates of Tetart, shared their experiences while discussing her skills on a French podcast, ‘Club Five.’ They have been vocal about Tetart’s physical strength, which they compare to a ‘train.’ Bestagno, who has played against big names like Brittney Griner, remarked on Tetart’s power, noting the significant difference in strength compared to other players.
The debate on whether Tetart could thrive in the WNBA continues. Some believe her strength is unparalleled in women’s basketball. Nonetheless, Bestagno argues that basketball involves more than just physical strength, as skill and technique play crucial roles.
Tetart, listed at 6’3″ and 200 pounds, has dominated in her current league but faces uncertainty about her potential in the American league. When asked if Tetart could dominate in the WNBA, Bestagno responded negatively, emphasizing that her strength alone doesn’t guarantee success on the court.
Despite the ongoing debates, Tetart plans to continue playing for Monaco when the season resumes in September. Crudo, another former teammate, expressed concerns over the fairness of allowing Tetart to compete with women, citing the potential impact on opportunities for female athletes. The discussion remains heated as stakeholders seek to address the complexities surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports.
