Tony D’Angelo faced a significant challenge at Heatwave, defending the NXT Championship against formidable opponents: Grayson Waller, Cruz Montana, and Zilla Fatu. This event marked the most demanding test of his reign, where pinning was not a requisite to losing the title. Eager competitors aimed to reach the pinnacle of the men’s division, with Fatu debuting in singles, Montana transitioning from Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, and Waller striving to reclaim top status.
Competitors were relentless, refusing to stay down. Fatu executed a powerful flying Samoan Spike on D’Angelo, attempting a pin. As the referee began the count, Waller removed him from the ring, displaying sheer determination despite being worn out by the relentless attacks from opponents.
Amid intense exchanges, Fatu found himself on the announcer table after clashing with D’Angelo and Montana. Waller, assessing the situation from the ring, seized an opportunity. He climbed the top turnbuckle and delivered an elbow drop onto Fatu, crashing through the table in a dramatic moment.
In the ring, D’Angelo contended with Montana as Waller regrouped. Montana executed his move, Spin the Block, on D’Angelo. Yet, Waller swiftly intervened, expelling Montana from the ring and pinning D’Angelo to clinch victory.
Waller secured his inaugural NXT title, a culmination of efforts since his beginning with the brand and his triumph in the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge in 2022. Though he faced setbacks previously, on this occasion, he ascended to the heights of NXT.
Returning to NXT TV, Waller demonstrated that his words resonated with reality in the ring.
