91-Year-Old Reclaims Record as Oldest Appalachian Trail Hiker

The Appalachian Trail is a formidable challenge. Stretching 2,193 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, it tests every hiker’s endurance. Yet, 91-year-old Dale Sanders persevered and reclaimed his record as the oldest thru-hiker.

Endurance and Falls

Each year, over 14 million older adults in the U.S. experience falls. Sanders is familiar with this statistic. He logged 71 falls while hiking the trail. Six of these were serious. One led to a brief hospital stay. But none stopped his determination.

A Long-Planned Comeback

Sanders, known as Grey Beard on the trail, set the record in 2017 at age 82. He briefly lost it to his friend, M.J. Eberhart, in 2020. Sanders didn’t wait long to announce his comeback plan. Despite six months of preparation, returning to the trail was tough.

In June, Sanders took a hard fall while descending Killington Mountain in Vermont. He scraped his limbs, but nothing broke. A pinched nerve led to a hospital visit in Maine, initially feared to be a stroke. Temporarily cleared, he contemplated quitting, but his wife’s support motivated him to continue.

Beyond Record Setting

Sanders found joy in Pennsylvania, amid supportive “trail angels.” Their kindness changed his goal. Reclaiming his record became secondary. The encouragement he provided others took precedence.

Meredith Ewenson witnessed Sanders’ influence when her hiking group encountered him in New Hampshire. His determination and energy left a lasting impression. His ability and spirit motivated many along his journey.

Sanders’ Life Journey

Born in Kentucky in 1935, Sanders faced childhood bullying due to his small stature. He found confidence in solo sports. His accomplishments span beyond hiking. He’s paddled the Mississippi River and served in the Navy before a career in parks and recreation.

Modeling resilience, Sanders rests when needed, like the time he took a brief nap during a challenging 12-mile hike. His journey emphasizes the importance of perseverance and motivates others to tackle their own challenges.
