Democratic Representative Stephen Lynch has successfully defended his seat in a high-stakes primary, as projected by NBC News. The 71-year-old defeated Patrick Roath, a younger and more progressive opponent. Lynch’s win came during a turbulent primary season where challenges to incumbents were rampant.
Patrick Roath, a 39-year-old and former aide to Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, posed a significant challenge. He outraised and outspent Lynch, receiving endorsements from figures like David Hogg’s Leaders We Deserve and prominent teachers’ unions. Despite these efforts, Lynch retained his position by emphasizing his extensive experience and commitment to the district.
Lynch showcased his record, claiming accountability for the Trump Administration and highlighting strong ties with unions. During a forum in August, he remarked on his long-term engagement with district communities, stating, “I got to know this district by living here and regularly attending hundreds of town meetings.”
In another significant state race, Representative Richard Neal also secured renomination. He beat Jeromie Whalen, a high school teacher advocating for progressive policies. Neal spent over $1 million on campaign ads, highlighting his dedication to his political career.
Meanwhile, in Massachusetts’ 6th District, Dan Koh emerged victorious in the Democratic primary. Koh, with extensive experience working for top Democrats, defeated challengers in the race to replace Seth Moulton. His campaign focused on opposing Trump-era policies and promoting Medicare for All.
