The USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in Thailand, marking the end of a long voyage in the Middle East. The vessel anchored near Pattaya after 286 days at sea, with 250 days without docking. Approximately 5,000 sailors are set to experience a ‘liberty port call’ during this visit.
Challenges at Sea
The crew faced numerous challenges aboard the Lincoln, including supply shortages and plumbing issues. There were also concerns regarding crew mental health, but the Navy has denied any incidents of attempted suicides.
Rear Admiral Robert E. Loughran noted the importance of the visit. He emphasized the chance for sailors to relax and highlighted the strong ties between the United States and Thailand. This visit is regarded as both an economic opportunity and a sign of diplomatic strength.
Pattaya Prepares for an Economic Boost
The city of Pattaya is eager to welcome the sailors. Local businesses expect economic benefits from the influx of visitors. A local business leader described the arrival as ‘quite special’ for Pattaya. Authorities aim to ensure a smooth experience for visitors and locals alike.
Tourism and Preparedness
Pattaya is famous for its resorts, nightlife, and more, appearing as a preferred tourist hub since the 1960s due to U.S. military influence. As the Vietnam War progressed, U.S. personnel frequented this city, boosting its tourism profile.
The Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya predicts positive economic impacts from the sailors’ spending. Thai media suggest significant spending on tourism-related services. The mayor estimates each sailor might spend between 1,000 to 3,000 Thai baht, totaling potentially 15 million baht or $450,000.
Security Measures
With the influx of visitors, Pattaya officials have increased security. Enhanced police patrols and around 600 officials are on duty to manage public safety. Police are also ensuring fair business practices and controlling areas like Pattaya’s red-light district.
The local government encourages visitors to enjoy the city’s beaches and attractions. Despite the complexities, both officials and locals anticipate a successful and beneficial visit.
